Kirkennan Self-Catering Cottages in Autumn
22nd Sept - 21st Dec
Autumn can be a wonderful time to stay in our 3 cozy self-catering cottages at Kirkennan and a good time to visit Dumfries and Galloway:
- The colour of the trees can be quite magical. Kirkennan Estate itself is known for its mature trees which look great at this time of year. Guests are welcome to wander round the Estate grounds and woodland.
- The red squirrels are often busy around the Estate - in particular the lawns in front of The Mews.
- It is a great time for viewing visiting wildlife in local reserves. Huge flocks of over-wintering barnacle geese will start to arrive at RSPB Mersehead and WWT Caerlaverock in late September and October. Wild Seasons usually has a range of autumn wildlife events in Dumfries & Galloway.
- For those that enjoy fishing the best run of salmon is Sept, Oct, Nov and The Urr is one of only 3 Scottish rivers open for fishing until the end of November - access to the lower beat is only 5 min drive from Kirkennan. Information and booking can be found online at Dalbeattie Angling Association or you can get them from M Mcowan and Son in Dalbeattie or Castle Douglas.
- It is a good time to experience the magic of the UK's first Dark Sky Park in the Galloway Forest - night skies are also pretty good at Kirkennan.
- Early October is the best time to see Red Deer in Galloway Forest Park as it is when the rut takes place.
- You can enjoy brisk autumn walks followed by cozy evenings in by a real wood fire. There are miles of woodland walks from the door of your holiday cottage and many lovely coastal walks a short drive away.
- We are a quiet rural area and a good place to bring dogs to escape from fireworks on bonfire night.
Woodsedge Cottage sleeps up to 5 in 3 bedrooms. It has level access throughout and has a weteroom so is particularly suitable for those with limited mobility. There is an open fire and an enclosed rear garden.
Kirkennan Mews is the smallest of our cottages with 2 bedrooms (sleeping up to 5). It features a wood-burning stove and beautiful views out across the Estate's landscaped gardens.
Kirkennan Lodge stands on its own in a large enclosd garden. Sleeping up to 7 in 4 bedrooms its layout means it is suitable for both single visitors or couples or 3 generational families. It also has an open fire.
